The ten most common mistakes we find in Lithuanian online stores and how to fix each one. Based on dozens of real Shopify store audits.
Shopify or WooCommerce. An Honest Answer for Lithuanian Businesses
Every week someone asks us the same question. Should I build my store on Shopify or WooCommerce? The honest answer is that both can work. The better question is which one will still be working for you two years from now, without eating your weekends.
We build exclusively on Shopify, so you know where we stand. But we’ve also migrated enough stores away from WooCommerce to know exactly where each platform shines and where it hurts. Here’s the comparison we wish every founder read before choosing.
The core difference in one paragraph
WooCommerce is free software you install on your own hosting and are responsible for. Shopify is a subscription service where the platform is responsible for itself. Everything else, the costs, the maintenance, the security, the stress, flows from that single difference.
What WooCommerce does well
WooCommerce gives you total ownership. Your server, your code, your database. If you can imagine a feature, someone can build it, because nothing is locked. For content-heavy projects that sell a little on the side, it’s a natural fit, since it lives inside WordPress and inherits its publishing strengths.
It also looks cheaper on paper. The software costs nothing, hosting in Lithuania starts at a few euros per month, and there’s no platform commission on top.
Where the WooCommerce bill actually arrives
The price tag is not the price. A serious WooCommerce store needs quality hosting, a page builder or premium theme, a backup solution, a security plugin, a caching plugin, and updates. Constant updates. WordPress core, PHP versions, WooCommerce itself, and every plugin in between, each capable of breaking the others on a bad day.
None of this is a problem if you have a developer on call. It becomes a problem when the store is down on a Saturday evening during your ad campaign and the hosting support answers in templated English. That scenario is not hypothetical. It’s the most common story we hear from businesses that come to us asking about migration.
What Shopify does well
Shopify removes the entire infrastructure layer from your life. Hosting, speed, security, updates and PCI compliance are simply handled. The store doesn’t go down during Black Friday. The checkout is one of the most optimized in the world, tested on millions of transactions daily.
For Lithuanian stores the ecosystem has matured beautifully. Montonio and Paysera plug in for banklink payments, Omniva and DPD parcel lockers connect through ready-made apps, and multilingual EU-ready selling is standard rather than a project.
The trade-off is control. You rent the platform, you follow its rules, and you pay monthly whether you sell or not. Deep customizations are possible, we do them daily, but the ceiling exists.
The real comparison for a Lithuanian business
If you’re a content creator or run a small catalog beside your main site, and you have technical help nearby, WooCommerce is a reasonable choice.
If e-commerce is your business, not a side feature, Shopify wins on the metric that matters. Total cost of actually running the store, including the hours you don’t spend fixing it. A Shopify subscription looks like a cost until you compare it with a developer’s monthly retainer for keeping WooCommerce healthy.
There’s a reason the traffic flows almost entirely one direction. We regularly migrate stores from WooCommerce to Shopify. We have never been asked to migrate one back.
Deciding in one minute
Choose WooCommerce if you need total code ownership, have ongoing developer support, and your store is secondary to your content.
Choose Shopify if you want to spend your time selling, marketing, and growing, while the platform quietly does its job in the background.
And if you’re currently on WooCommerce and the maintenance is wearing you down, migration is far less painful than it sounds. Products, customers, orders and SEO all move over safely when it’s done right. That’s literally our specialty, so if you want to talk it through, write to us.
